    Any way to get around the withholding in a u.s. interactive brokers account?

    Unfortunately not that I know of. The level of proceeds that are deemed dividends varies between transaction (the details will be in the filing), so some transactions can still be profitable for US holders. I might write a more detailed article on it in the blog, but I’m not a Canadian tax specialist and am wary of seeming to act in that capacity, I might miss something important.
